Daily Panchang — Tithi, Nakshatra, Chogadiya & Shubh Muhurat
The Vedic almanac for today, calculated for where you actually are. Understand the five limbs of the Panchang, read the Chogadiya hours, and find an auspicious window before you commit to anything important.
What is the Panchang?
Panchang means “five limbs” (pancha + anga). It is the Vedic almanac that describes a single day through five measurements taken from the positions of the Sun and Moon. Together they tell you the character of the day — which hours support a new beginning, and which are better spent waiting.
- Tithi — the lunar day, measured by the angular distance between Sun and Moon
- Vara — the weekday, each ruled by a planet
- Nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon occupies, one of 27
- Yoga — one of 27 combinations derived from the combined Sun–Moon longitude
- Karana — a half-tithi; there are 11 in the cycle
Chogadiya: reading the hours
Chogadiya divides daylight and night into eight slots each. Four are considered favourable — Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Char — and three are avoided for new work: Rog, Kaal and Udveg. Because the slots follow sunrise and sunset, they shift with your location and the season, which is why a Chogadiya table calculated for another city is of little use.
Rahu Kaal and other inauspicious windows
Rahu Kaal is a roughly ninety-minute period each day, its timing set by the weekday and local sunrise, traditionally avoided for beginning anything important. Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal work the same way. None of them make a day “bad” — they simply mark hours the tradition suggests you step around.
Finding a Shubh Muhurat
A Shubh Muhurat is an auspicious window chosen for a specific act — a housewarming, a purchase, signing a contract, starting a journey. Selecting one means combining the day's Tithi and Nakshatra with the favourable Chogadiya slots and avoiding Rahu Kaal. 101 Pandit does that combination for your exact location and shows the resulting windows.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Panchang on 101 Pandit free?
- Yes. The daily Panchang is one of the free features and needs no login. It includes Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, Chogadiya slots and the Shubh Muhurat finder.
- Why does the Panchang differ between two cities?
- Tithi, Nakshatra and Chogadiya all depend on local sunrise and sunset, so the same calendar day produces different timings in different places. 101 Pandit calculates the Panchang for your location rather than a single fixed city.
- What is the difference between Tithi and the calendar date?
- A Tithi is a lunar day, defined by the Moon gaining twelve degrees on the Sun. It does not align with a 24-hour civil day, so a Tithi can begin mid-afternoon and end the following morning.
- Is the Panchang available in Hindi?
- Yes. The whole app, the Panchang included, works in both English and हिंदी, and you can switch language at any time.
