Numerology — Birth Number, Destiny Number & Lo Shu Grid
Your date of birth reduced to the numbers a reading is built on. How the birth and destiny numbers are calculated, what the Lo Shu grid shows through repeated and missing digits, and where lucky numbers come from.
Birth number and destiny number
Numerology reduces a date of birth to single digits and reads meaning into them. The birth number (also called the psychic number) comes from the day of the month alone — someone born on the 23rd reduces 2 + 3 to 5. The destiny number uses the entire date, day, month and year, reduced the same way. The first is said to describe how you experience yourself; the second, the arc of your life.
The Lo Shu grid
The Lo Shu grid is a three-by-three square holding the digits 1 to 9. Your date of birth is written into it, and what the reading looks at is which digits repeat and which are missing altogether. A number appearing three times is read as an emphasis; an empty cell as a quality to develop. Rows, columns and diagonals that fill completely are treated as particular strengths.
- Repeated digits — traits considered pronounced
- Missing digits — areas the reading suggests working on
- Completed lines — combinations given special significance
Name numbers and lucky numbers
Letters are assigned numeric values and a name reduces to a single number, which is compared against the birth and destiny numbers for agreement. Lucky numbers, days and colours are drawn from the same set, along with the planet each digit is associated with — 1 with the Sun, 2 with the Moon, 3 with Jupiter, and so on through the nine.
Daily and hourly cycles
Beyond the fixed numbers of a birth date, numerology tracks moving ones: a day number for each date, and weekly and hourly cycles layered over it. These are what people use to time a decision rather than to describe a personality.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate my birth number?
- Add the digits of your day of birth and reduce to one digit. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2, so the birth number is 2.
- What is the difference between birth number and destiny number?
- The birth number uses only the day of the month. The destiny number uses the complete date of birth — day, month and year — reduced to a single digit. They often differ, and the relationship between them is part of the reading.

- Do I need my birth time for a numerology reading?
- No. Numerology works from your date of birth and your name, so no birth time or birthplace is needed. Astrology features are the ones that require them.
