Kundli Matching — 36 Guna Milan Explained

Ashtakoota Milan compares two birth charts across eight weighted categories. Here is what each koota measures, what the score out of 36 really tells you, and how Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik dosha are read.

What Guna Milan actually measures

Ashtakoota Milan compares the Moon's position in two birth charts across eight categories, called kootas. Each koota carries a different weight, and the weights add up to 36 — which is where the familiar “out of 36” score comes from. It is a compatibility model built on the Moon, meaning it speaks to temperament and emotional fit rather than to finances or health.

  • Varna (1 point) — broad temperament and outlook
  • Vashya (2) — mutual influence and attraction
  • Tara (3) — compatibility of birth stars, read for wellbeing
  • Yoni (4) — physical and instinctive compatibility
  • Graha Maitri (5) — friendship between the two Moon-sign lords
  • Gana (6) — nature: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa
  • Bhakoot (7) — emotional and material harmony between Moon signs
  • Nadi (8) — the heaviest single factor, tied to constitution and progeny

Reading the score

A total below 18 is traditionally considered a weak match, 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 good, and above 32 excellent. The number on its own is a summary, not a verdict: two charts can score well overall while failing a koota that matters to the family, or score modestly while carrying no dosha at all. The breakdown is worth more than the total.

Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik dosha

Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same Nadi, costing all eight of its points — the single largest deduction in the system. Bhakoot dosha comes from certain Moon-sign distances between the two charts. Manglik (or Kuja) dosha is separate from the 36-point count entirely: it is read from the placement of Mars in specific houses. Classical texts also describe cancellations for each of these, which is why a flagged dosha is a reason to look closer rather than to stop.

What you need to run a match

Accurate matching needs the date, time and place of birth for both people — the time especially, because the Moon changes Nakshatra roughly every day and the Ascendant changes every two hours. If a birth time is uncertain, treat the result as indicative and say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kundli matching free on 101 Pandit?
Yes. The 36-point Guna compatibility check is a free feature, with the full koota-by-koota breakdown and an overall percentage. Match Making, which compares up to five people side by side, is also free.
How many gunas are needed for marriage?
Traditionally 18 out of 36 is treated as the minimum for an acceptable match, with 25 and above considered good. The individual kootas and any dosha matter as much as the total.
Can Nadi dosha be cancelled?
Classical texts describe several cancellations, for example when both charts share the same Moon sign but different Nakshatras, or the same Nakshatra with different padas. Whether a cancellation applies depends on the specific charts.
Do I need an exact birth time?
For Guna Milan the Moon's Nakshatra is what matters most, so a reasonably accurate time is usually enough. A precise time becomes important for Manglik analysis and for the full birth chart, because the Ascendant shifts roughly every two hours.
